So what’s the truth? Are there superfoods?

Answer: There are. And you needn’t go to Botswana or Borneo to bag them. In fact, you needn’t go farther than your local organic foods store, or even your supermarket, if it has a decent organic foods section in its produce department.

What’s more, superfoods abound. There are hundreds of them. What are superfoods? What is it that makes a food truly super? Simply that it offers superior nutrition for its cost and/or its calorie load. And you can’t do better than good, fresh, organically grown greens, vegetables, and fruits.

And what, specifically, is on the list of the best superfoods? The good news begins with this: You don’t need to get exotic. No need, for example, to chase acai berries. Not when blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries (both red and yellow) are waiting on nearby shelves, just for you.

Super-vegetables? Right there, too. Carrots. Peppers. Cucumbers. Tomatoes in a host of varieties. Beans. Peas. The humble beet—a neglected superfood now coming back into its own not only for food value but as the new tres chic on the vegetable fashion runway. Surprisingly ordinary stuff. All are great for good nutrition and building health. Most are superfoods for weight loss as well.

Greens-wise, you needn’t hunt down some exotic Mongolian leaf. Spinach, kale, chard, even mustard and turnip greens—those are leafy and bright, and each one a green superfood.

Superman spent a little time in his blue tights and red cape, solving crimes and saving America. But most of the time, this classic superhero was plain-old Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter for the Daily Planet. It’s the same for the real list of real super foods. You don’t need a fat wallet or a travel agent to find them. There is your superfoods list, right there, hiding in plain sight, in the bright lights of your organic foods store or supermarket—a pantheon of mild-mannered vegetables and fruits, ready to bust out and give you both superb nutrition and the best in health. And remember, sometimes less is more. You don’t always need those ultra-concentrated powders and supplements, instead go natural!
