Being 40 pounds overweight used to feel almost normal to me because I didn’t remember what it felt like not to be. I got used to being inactive, used to eating for emotional reasons, and used to going on crash diets to keep my ever increasing mass at bay. A certain Dr. William H. Fitzgerald introduced in 1915 a concept known as ‘zone therapy.’ This therapy focused on massaging and working the feet in order to improve one’s health. In the 1930s, American physiotherapist Eunice Ingram developed this theory further into what we call today ‘reflexology.’ Russian neurologist and psychiatrist Vladimir Bekterev, who studied the effect of external stimulation on the nervous system and internal organs, was actually first to use the term reflexology. If you’re asked to touch your right nostril or scratch your left knee, your hand will have no problems locating these areas. Why? For the same reason you can make a trip from New York to Los Angeles, or any other place in the US. Because you have a road map of the whole country—likely a pretty good one, right in your head.
