Heavy Metals: How to Protect Yourself Naturally

1. Heavy Metal Toxicity: What You Need to Know
We’ve all heard about heavy metal toxicity, but the reality is more nuanced: not all heavy metals are toxic, and not all toxic metals are heavy. Mercury is both heavy and highly toxic, while aluminum and beryllium are light metals that can also be harmful. Meanwhile, some heavy metals like zinc, iron, and copper are essential to health in small amounts.

Heavy metal toxicity isn’t new—metals like mercury, lead, and arsenic have always been part of our environment. What has changed is our level of exposure. Industrial pollution and modern chemicals have greatly increased the amounts found in our air, water, and food.
Heavy metals like lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic can be harmful when they accumulate in the body. They can block the action of important enzymes, mimic healthy minerals like calcium or iron, and create “free radicals” that damage cells. Over time, this can lead to serious health problems such as cancer, heart disease, brain disorders like Alzheimer’s, and kidney damage.
Meat can carry heavy metals from animals’ feed, water, and environment—especially seafood (mercury) and organ meats. While metals occur naturally, processing can raise their levels. Processed foods may also pick up metals from contaminated ingredients, additives, or equipment. Your first line of defense: eat more raw, unprocessed foods.
Often, when people cut meat from their diet, they increase their fish intake. But be careful—fish can be contaminated with mercury.
Here is quote from Men’s Journal about Tony Robbins: “Formerly a vegan, Robbins had a medical scare when he started introducing fish to his diet and suffered extreme mercury poisoning. “I almost died,” he says. “I was eating swordfish and tuna and built an incredibly painful amount of mercury in my blood. I recommend that anyone who eats fish should get a blood test when they can.”
The atmosphere holds much man-made pollution. Since industrialization, mercury concentration has increased up to 7 times. The ultimate source of mercury in most aquatic reservoirs is rainfall. It accumulates in our streams, oceans, wetlands, lakes, and fish farms. Even the most remote and pristine waters are contaminated with mercury. In the water, mercury, through metabolic processes, is converted to methylmercury first.

At this point, the methylmercury-containing bacteria are consumed by small fish, which in turn are eaten by larger fish, and thus the mercury reaches the entire food chain.
With each bigger fish, the level of poison becomes compounded and increases exponentially. Longer-living large fish, such as tuna, pose the greatest hazard to our health.
Mercury, a highly reactive heavy metal, exists in several forms, but eating fish is the main source of exposure to methylmercury. Mercury poisoning can result in headaches, acne, and fatigue. In more serious cases, mercury poisoning is linked to Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s Disease, and leukemia.
If you eat fish, limit it to 2–3 times per week and choose smaller varieties, which generally have lower mercury levels than large predatory fish.
2. Top Foods for Metal Detox
While preparing this newsletter, I reviewed the New York Times best-selling books The Medical Medium Heavy Metal Detox Cleanse and Medical Medium Cleanse to Heal. These guides outline how to remove toxic heavy metals—such as mercury, aluminum, and copper—from the brain and body, and offer healing plans for conditions like anxiety, depression, acne, eczema, Lyme, gut issues, brain fog, weight problems, migraines, bloating, vertigo, psoriasis, cysts, fatigue, PCOS, fibroids, UTIs, endometriosis, and autoimmune disorders.
Just because we don’t have these symptoms doesn’t mean our bodies are free of heavy metals—it’s still wise to take precautions. As I read through the recommendations, I realized that the raw food diet already incorporates many of the author’s suggestions.
Still, no one is completely immune to heavy metal exposure. Everyone has some level present in their body. Here’s what I do to help reduce heavy metal concentration in my body as a preventative measure.
The Power of Wild Blueberries for Heavy Metal Detox
When it comes to guarding the body against heavy metal harm, wild blueberries top my list. Packed with antioxidants—especially polyphenols and anthocyanins—they help counter the oxidative stress metals can cause, almost like polishing away “rust” from our cells. Research also indicates that compounds in blueberry extracts may latch onto metals such as cadmium, lead, and nickel, supporting the body’s natural detox processes.

Wild vs Cultivated Blueberries: What's the Difference?
Wild blueberries (lowbush) are small, naturally growing berries found in places like Maine and Canada. They’re tiny, tangy, and packed with twice the antioxidants of regular blueberries.
Supporting Liver Function
The liver is crucial for detoxifying the body. Wild blueberries enhance liver function with their rich phytonutrients, aiding in the efficient expulsion of toxins, including heavy metals.
I usually get my dried wild blueberries from Nuts.com—they’re certified organic, and I love their flavor. They sent me a Referral Link: use it to get $20 off your first order plus free shipping, and I’ll receive a referral credit. You’re welcome to use it—or buy from another source you like.
I eat a handful of dried wild blueberries each day. Consistency matters more than eating a large amount at once—their protective and detox benefits build over time. I like to soak them first and add them to my smoothie.
Cilantro: A Natural Ally for Heavy Metal Detox

Another food I use for heavy metal protection is cilantro. It has powerful detox properties.
Practical tip: Start small if you’re new to cilantro for detox—mobilizing too many metals at once can cause temporary symptoms like headaches or fatigue.
I include it in my salads and add it to my vegetable/celery juice every day.
Cilantro is often used in natural detox plans to help remove heavy metals like mercury, lead, and aluminum. It may work by binding to metals, helping release them from tissues, and—when combined with binders like chlorella—making it easier for the body to flush them out.
Detox Powerhouses: Chlorella & Spirulina

Chlorella and spirulina are both powerful for heavy metal detox. They’re considered dietary supplements because they’re usually sold in concentrated forms—powder, tablets, or capsules—rather than as whole foods. I’m not great at taking supplements and usually prefer whole foods, so while I’ve tried them, I haven’t been consistent.
Many people swear by their benefits. They provide complete plant-based protein, are rich in chlorophyll, and can stimulate immune activity to help fight infections. It may be worth looking into them more closely. However, one concern is that if the source isn’t high quality, you could end up adding the very heavy metals you’re trying to remove.
Pomegranate: A Sweet Support for Heavy Metal Cleansing

Another fruit I eat regularly is pomegranate. While it’s not as well-studied for heavy metal detox as foods like cilantro or chlorella, it can still offer support.
Pomegranates are rich in antioxidants—especially polyphenols like punicalagins—that help protect cells from the oxidative stress caused by heavy metals.
Get ready—they’ll be in season soon! In the U.S., pomegranates are typically available from late September through January, with peak harvest in October and November. Be sure to enjoy plenty while they’re at their best.
3. Featured Product
As many of you know, I’ve been working on fulfilling a lifelong dream — to dance! I’m now able to dance with confidence near the barre, however my balance is still a work in progress. But believe me, I will get there!
To continue working on my alighnment, I recently started sessions with a new myofascial release therapist. When she asked my age and I told her I’m 67, she was genuinely surprised and said, “I’m also 67! How come you look 20 years younger?” She added that even she looks younger than most people her age.
And it’s not just her. I hear this often in my fitness senior classes! This is just confirmation that what I’ve been sharing with you over the years truly works.

Featured Product: Nourishing Night Cream
I’ve been using our Nourishing Night Cream since 2012 — it’s our most popular cream for a reason. I love pairing it with the Strigil for effective exfoliation, massage, and deep penetration. It also works beautifully with RejuvaCup and RejuvaCup HD, providing a smooth glide while maintaining a strong seal for proper vacuum effect.
I use it with the Violet Ray device as well. It helps the mushroom and spoon electrodes glide effortlessly over the skin, offering a soothing experience while the Violet Ray delivers its sanitizing effect — especially helpful for addressing skin blemishes.
This is the purest, truly natural Nourishing Night Cream. NO preservatives, NO emulsifiers, NO stabilizers, NO artificial fragrances. Made from cold-pressed oils, this cream is as close to "raw" as it's possible to get.
