Time for cleansing. You know I’m a big believer in juicing—for years, I’ve been juicing all sorts of vegetables. But lately, I’ve gone a specific way: celery-and-apple juice. The core idea…Plain celery juice, 8 to 16 ounces of it, is the best and the easiest way to keep your juicing practice going. But I find the need to add one small apple. Doubtless it’s the lingering sugarholic in me, still demanding some sweetness in my daily juice. I won’t fight it—I figure consistency and enjoyment of the process is more important than any arbitrary notion of “purity.”

Spirulina, many researchers say, is one of the most complete foods we know: high-quality vegetable proteins, and highly assimilable iron—as much as 28.5 milligrams per 100 grams. Some sources say that’s 58 times more than spinach, 18 times higher than you’ll find in meat. Ideal for vegans. Spirulina contains a blend of amino acids with sulfur, nitrogen, and cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12).
